Premiere June 4, 2017 | 6pm in the CURRENT SESSIONS x La MaMa Moves Festival
Created and performed by Maree ReMalia in collaboration with Lillian Cho
Back Issue IV is a mash up sourcing and synthesizing materials from four different dance works made over the past four years, in four different cities, with four different sets of collaborators. Each work emerged from the specific identities of each cast and their particular abilities and idiosyncrasies. This project is meant to be a dialogue between the previously produced materials, and like a game of telephone, the ways Lilly Cho and Maree ReMalia meet and interpret the information over time, space, and identity.
From Maura Donohue’s Culturebot review “Remake the World: La MaMa Moves!”
“Maree ReMalia’s duet with Lillian Cho, “Back Issue IV” collected sources and synthesized material from four previous dance works from the past four years, in four different cities, with four different sets of collaborators. As the two worked through the reworking, the game structure rose to the surface. Along with occasional outbursts of pocket-monster style silliness, the relay of information, the shift between leader, follower, or unified doubles would spark or they’d simply slide into a repeated pattern. Their jumpers hinted at child’s play, but they had clearly sourced fertile compositional histories with sophisticated skill.”
